Northern Illinois Rocketry Association
Model of the Month: 1998

January

Another night of scale models at NIRA. Newly elected NIRA president Rick Gaff won adult with his Mercury-Atlas. (Naturally, he won -- he counted the hands. It mattered little that he got all the votes). Matthew Duckworth won Youth with his Nike-Apache.

February

Joe Nowak took Adult with his really cute Boyce Aerospace 1/100 scale Mercury-Redstone and John McCallum took Youth with his nicely done Estes Sidewinder.

March

Tom Pastrick was the hands down winner in Adult with his new and improved Topkat. John McCallum was the back-to-back winner in Youth with his Estes Little Joe II.

April

Kimber Guzik beat out her husband John's Blackhawk (and had to sleep on the couch) in Adult with her nicely finished Bullet. Meanwhile, Mark Soppet won in Youth with his equally nicely finished Sizzler.

May

"Bullet" Bob Kaplow won Adult with his RalphCo Flying Crayon and Matthew Duckworth won Youth his impressive 4H Championship-winning S1A Archer.

June

It's Scale Night! Bob Wiersbe won Adult with his Centuri Little Joe II and Pierre Miller won Youth with his MX-774 Hiroc.

July

It's a family affair. John "Waldo" Guzik won in Adult with his Nike Ajax (a Launch Pad kit). Michael "Wow, I didn't lose my rocket" Guzik won Youth with his LOC Aura, which he had launched the week before at NCNF on an Aerotech F50!

August

The ever-fine-rocket-producing Mark Soppet won in Youth while most of the club was off at NARAM-40. (That rocket may be an Estes Twister, although knowing Mark, it could be an HL-20 lifting body.) Adult winner is unknown.

September

Yet again another Scale night at NIRA Model of the Month. Tom Pastrik was the surprise (heh, heh) Adult winner with his scratch built Bomarc. That's the 3rd place NARAM-40 C Division Scale trophy Tom is holding he had received just the month before for his Bomarc. Nick Piette won in Youth with his nicely done Estes Sidewinder.

October

That's NIRA president (and MotM vote counter) Rick Gaff with his NCR Interceptor G. John McCullum swept Youth with his Estes Juno C. (NIRA really loves scale.)

November

Norm "The Building Superintendent" Dziedzic and his scale John Hancock Center. We have a promise of plans for The Leading Edge, so we anticipate edifice drag races at an upcoming NIRA launch. Daniel McCullum was the hands down Youth winner with his finely finished Estes Dart.

December

That's Norm "Odd Roc" Dziedzic and his Flying Dutch Boy. Norm got stained with disapproval for this unpainted model, but rolled over the competition to barely cover the Adult division. The "body" tube is 3 paint rollers and for fins Norm used four paint brushes. Mark Soppet won in Youth with his modified Falcon. This was the second time Mark has brought a Falcon for MOM, although this time he didn't trim the glider with the "help" of Tom Pastrick -- and break a wing.
